Selling Whiskey to Women is Easier Than You Think: They’re Already Drinking it and are Thirsty for More

As Pedro Shanahan sees it, women always have had an affinity for whiskey, as far back as the birth of the United States. They ran the farms that made the grain that made the mash that made the whiskey — often owning, operating and trading American whiskey as a commodity while their husbands were off at war. In fact, Kentucky, the birthplace of bourbon, has record of several woman-owned distilleries from 1812. Shanahan is the Spirit Guide at Seven Grand, a whiskey bar in downtown Los Angeles with an “old-boys’-club” vibe, leather couches, a cigar patio and taxidermy adorning the walls. Ladies (and gents), here are a few whiskey cocktail recipes from Proof on Main, Citizen Public House and Seven Grand to try at home:

Duck Hunter

Created by Leo Rivas at Seven Grand, Los Angeles

2 oz. Seven Grand Private Edition Eagle Rare Ten Year Old Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey
½ oz. Carpano Antica Vermouth
¼ oz. Amaro Lucano
Stir over ice and strain into Coupette. Garnish with Burnt Orange Twist

Woodland Cider

Created by Jenni Pittman at Proof on Main. Louisville

1 ½ oz. Woodford Reserve Bourbon
½ oz. Clove Ginger Syrup
3 oz. Apple Cider
Shake and strain into martini glass.

Clove Ginger Syrup

3 cups water
2 cups syrup
¼ cup cinnamon
4 tbsp crushed cloves
½ cup shaved ginger root
In a small saucepan bring water to a boil. Remove water from heat and add sugar, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Stir in cinnamon, ginger and cloves. Cover and allow to steam for one hour. Strain in order to remove ginger and cloves.

Secret Elixir

Created by Joy Richard, Citizen Public House & Oyster Bar, Boston

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add:
2 oz Sazerac Rye
½ oz Benedictine
½ oz Cinzano Sweet Vermouth
½ oz Royal Combier
Stir & Strain into a chilled cocktail glass
Orange Peel garnish

Bourbon Belle

Created by Joy Richard, Citizen Public House & Oyster Bar, Boston

2 oz Four Roses Yellow Label Bourbon
½ oz Cinzano Rosso vermouth
½ oz Mathilde Peches
3 dashes Angostura Bitters
Stir with ice & Strain into a chilled cocktail glass
Garnish with a house brandied cherry.
